Adaptive Design, Inc.
ILR High Road New York is a statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic engagement and leadership through economic justice, evidence-based policy, and strategic development that creates opportunity for community members to share in prosperity. The Summer 2026 New York City (NYC) High Road Fellowship Program will run from June 1st to July 31st, 2026. Students intern in person with various NYC partner organizations and will participate in weekly cohort workshops focused on critical reflection and peer-to-peer collaboration and networking and learning opportunities with guest speakers will be offered at ILR's NYC office on Lexington Avenue. All interns will be paid and need-based subsidized housing will be available.
Adaptive Design’s primary focus is supporting children and families through our Adapt for Access program, serving age groups ranging from birth to 3 years, 4 to 12 years, and beyond, all of whom have disabilities or are multiply disabled. We work across diverse settings, tailoring our solutions to meet each child's specific needs.
The ADA team comprises nine interdisciplinary professionals with expertise in industrial design, fabrication, development, and grant writing. Our workshop is a two-floor, open-plan facility in Midtown Manhattan. We are further supported by a vibrant network of design and administrative interns who help maintain relationships with our clients. Additionally, retired professionals volunteer their time and expertise to help build custom adaptations and communication cards. Together, with the support of our staff and networks, we create meaningful differences in the lives of those we serve.
Interns will engage in projects that range from supporting research and outreach for our Adapt for Access program, which looks at the needs of children and families with disabilities at home, in school, or in the community; this will include but is not limited to researching organizations and schools in need of custom adaptations, attending community resource presentations and events to grow Adaptive Design’s network of partners larger, and more.
