Opportunity Description

Adaptive Design, Inc.

ILR High Road New York is a statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic engagement and leadership through economic justice, evidence-based policy, and strategic development that creates opportunity for community members to share in prosperity.  The Summer 2024 New York City (NYC) High Road Fellowship Program will run from June 4th to July 26th. Students intern in person with various NYC partner organizations and will participate in weekly cohort workshops focused on critical reflection and peer-to-peer collaboration and networking and learning opportunities with guest speakers will be offered at ILR's NYC office on Lexington Avenue. All interns will be paid and need-based subsidized housing will be available

Adaptive Design Association (ADA) uses an innovative approach to disability services. We are the only organization that both builds custom assistive equipment (adaptations) using easily accessible materials like cardboard and wood and teaches community partners how to do so. We work primarily with children in our Adapt for Access program from the ages of birth to 3 y-o and 4-12 y-o and beyond who have disabilities or are multiply disabled in various settings.

We are a staff of 8 interdisciplinary team members with backgrounds in industrial design, fabrication, development, and grant writing working within a two-floor workshop space in midtown Manhattan. At ADA we utilize the support of our robust design interns and administrative interns to support relationships with clients and retired professional fabrication volunteers to support the building process for custom equipment and communication cards.

Interns will engage in projects that range from supporting research and outreach for our Adapt for Access program, which looks at the needs of children and families with disabilities at home, in school, or in the community; this will include but is not limited to researching organizations and schools in need of custom adaptations, attending community resource presentations and events to grow Adaptive Design’s network of partners larger, and more.
