Opportunity Description

Overview: The College of Human Ecology (CHE) offers an 8-week summer internship program in New York City (NYC) for rising juniors and seniors. This exciting opportunity underscores our commitment to provide students with community-engaged learning experiences and professional development. During the day, students will intern at a partner site, and in the evening and on weekends, they will engage in coursework, field trips, and professional development. Partner sites represent a variety of fields such as, youth development, nutrition, medicine, law, administration, fashion/design, and more. 

Eligibility: Rising CHE juniors and seniors in good academic standing (GPA 2.7).  
*All GPHS majors are eligible for this opportunity (e.g., GPHS Majors in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences). 

Internship Schedule: Students will spend Monday-Friday (9:00-5:00p) at the internship site engaging in a variety of activities (e.g., administrative tasks, program implementation, report writing). During the evening and on weekends, students will go on field trips (e.g., museums) to advance their knowledge and understanding of equity in urban spaces, and engage in professional development (e.g., networking with alumni).  

Stipends & Housing: $3,000- $6,000 stipend for the 8-week internship. Student housing will be available at the 92nd street Y Residence in Manhattan. Scholarships will be available for a select number of students (i.e., if a partner site is unable to provide a stipend and/or if a student needs funding for housing).  

Selection Process: Students will submit their cover letter, resume, transcript, and 2 reference letters to partner sites of interest. Partner sites will select students to interview and notify the CHE in NYC team as to whom they would like to extend an offer to.    

Timeline:  

December 9th, 2024: Application portal opens.  
January 30th, 2025: Applications portal closes. 
February 2025: Partner sites interview and select student interns.   
March 18th - May 6th, 2025: Students complete a 7-week internship preparation course.  
June 2nd -July25th, 2025: 8 week CHE in NYC internship program.
*The TUMI internship is 10-weeks.


Available Internships:

Boys and Girls Club of Harlem: 
The position offers the opportunity to work closely with youth and urban communities, contributing to Boys and Girls Club of Harlem (BGCH) mission of empowering young people through workforce development, academic enrichment, and social-emotional learning. The BGCH is seeking interns for a summer position to support data analysis, program implementation with K- 12 students on a variety of topics (e.g., food justice, coding), and community outreach related to urban food systems. This role provides hands-on experience in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, ideal for students with strong research, writing, and communication skills.

Glamour Gals : Glamour Gals (GG) is a nonprofit focused on reducing senior loneliness through teen volunteer chapters that provide companionship, conversation, and beauty makeovers to seniors in care. Interns will work on GG's Intergenerational Leadership Program. Responsibilities include outreach marketing, securing new volunteers, hands on leadership and participation, and program survey and evaluation. The internship highlights weekly mentor calls/meetings, exclusive networking events, direct engagement with the founder and alum, and a look into what it takes to run a nonprofit for over 25 years! 

New York Law School: New York Law School has a rich history of fostering legal innovation, civic engagement, and public service. Established in 1891, the Law School is renowned for its commitment to training lawyers who are not only skilled advocates but also leaders in their communities, equipped to tackle some of the most pressing legal challenges of our time. NYLS's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and public interest law creates a nurturing environment where students are encouraged to explore the intersections of law, policy, and social justice.

Undergraduate Interns in the summer program will rotate through several key departments and affiliated centers/organizations, gaining exposure to various facets of higher education, public policy, law and legal education, including:

  1. Center for New York City and State Law: In this rotation, interns will work closely with the Center's team to support initiatives aimed at addressing urban legal issues, public policy, and municipal governance. Responsibilities will depend on interest and needs but may include conducting research, assisting in the journalistic coverage of City and State government, and assisting in the preparation of reports or presentations.
  2. 5Boro Institute: In this rotation, interns will have the opportunity to work with the 5Boro Institute, a public-policy think-thank based on the NYLS campus. Work here may include research and writing, assisting in the development of policy reports, and advocacy. Work may also include assisting with various events and other administrative tasks.
  3. Public Legal Education: Under supervision of affiliated faculty, interns will research legal hot topics, prepare law-based activities for middle and high school students, support law students in teaching middle and high school students in under served communities, and assist law professor in preparation for international conference presentation in Warsaw, Poland.
  4. Law School Operations and Management: In addition to these rotations, interns will learn various aspects of higher education management and operations based on the needs of the institution. Tasks may include assisting with event planning, communications, student services, or data management. This work may also include the opportunity to work on ongoing faculty research projects. 

NYC Urban Agriculture : The Mayor’s Office of Urban Agriculture (MOUA) in New York City, launched in 2022, works to increase access to locally grown food, reduce the city's environmental impact, and stimulate economic growth through urban agriculture. MOUA leads efforts in food access, climate resiliency, innovative land use, and building a green economy, and is recognized as a national leader in the field. The office is seeking students to support research, policy development, data analysis, and community outreach related to urban food systems, climate-smart agriculture, and labor in urban farming. The role offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, ideal for students with strong research, writing, and communication skills interested in urban agriculture and climate issues.

TUMITumi is offering a 10- week summer Design Intern position focused on 3D modeling and design details. Interns will work in New York City and have hands-on experience in creating detailed 3D renderings, refining design elements, and contributing to product development. Interns will use software like Fusion360, Rhino, or SolidWorks to transform sketches into 3D models, collaborate with the design team, and focus on design details such as materials and finishes. The role also involves maintaining documentation, assisting with presentations, and offering creative input. This internship requires full participation for 10-weeks (June 2nd, 2024- August 8th 2024), Monday- Thursday from 9AM-5 PM.  A strong candidate should have the following qualifications:

-Have a portfolio showcasing 3D modeling work
-Currently enrolled in a relevant design program, such as Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field
-Proficiency in 3D modeling software (Fusion360, Rhino, SolidWorks, etc.) and a strong understanding of design principles.
-Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and an understanding of product development concepts.
-Proven and demonstrable experience in 3D Modeling and Rendering.
