The University of Cantabria offers many courses in English in a range of technical and non-technical fields as well as special offerings in Spanish History & Culture specifically for international students. Students with intermediate Spanish can take "English-Friendly" courses that are taught in Spanish with English tutorials, bibliographic resources, and exams.  Students with advanced Spanish may enroll in classes fully taught in Spanish.

Coursework And Schedule:

Immersion: Students take a Spanish language immersion courses at Cantabria in August or January.  Mandatory for students with little to no Spanish. Recommended for all students except native speakers.

Fall Semester: Students must take at least one Spanish language class, either in August or during the semester, and choose their remaining courses from the options above.  Students must take a minimum of 30ECTS (European credits equal to 15 Cornell credits) unless given permission by their major/college to take fewer.  Note January end date for fall semester to make sure that exams will not conflict with the start of the spring semester at Cornell.

Spring Semester: Students must take at least one Spanish language class, either in January or during the semester, and choose their remaining courses from the options above.  Students must take a minimum of 30ECTS (European credits equal to 15 Cornell credits) unless given permission by their major/college to take fewer.

Optional Internship: Students may work with the University of Cantabria to obtain a summer internship with a Spanish engineering firm following spring semester finals.  Students must have a visa for a duration longer than 6 months.

Course Selection & Enrollment

  • To find information on specific courses, go to the program’s website using the link in the “Snapshot” section of the Overview page.
  • For assistance in selecting courses, see your faculty or college advisor. (Note: You may earn elective, distributional, minor or major credit depending on your major and college.)
  • You may need to look at courses from a previous semester (i.e.: the most recent spring semester if you want to select classes for a future spring abroad) 

Course Load & Credits

  • Study the language of the host country (or take a course in that language) when studying in a non-English speaking country for a semester or year
  • Take the equivalent of 15 Cornell credits for a full semester, even if it is possible to take fewer and still graduate on time
  • Decisions on the final allocation of credit are made upon successful completion of the course (must earn grade equivalent of a “C” or higher—all courses must award a letter grade).

Transcript & Grades

  • Grades will appear on the Cornell transcript in the same format as they are recorded on the original transcript generated by the host institution. Grades are not factored into the Cornell GPA.
  • For information on how grades appear on the transcript and frequently asked questions, including transcript dates for graduating seniors, please refer to the Transcripts and Credits page on the Education Abroad website.
  • You must request your program to send the transcript to Cornell.

    If possible, have them send the transcript via a secure means (password protected, Box/Dropbox, etc.) to abroad@cornell.edu . Do not use a default email address for Cornell University.
