What programs of studies should apply?

We accept applications from all faculties at the Technion, however, we encourage applicants that have the potential to be placed with faculty research areas at Cornell Tech. We suggest that you review the Cornell Tech research areas to see where and with whom you share interest and list the faculty members on your application. Typical applicants come from fields listed here.

Additionally, there are some Runway companies that seek summer researchers and we encourage you to review them for potential research areas.

Which faculty are participating?  Participating faculty vary year by year and won’t be confirmed until there are applicants. We encourage you to list faculty members you are interested in working with on your application to boost your chances of placement.

Can I apply to the program and work with faculty who are on the Ithaca or Weill Cornell campuses?  Unfortunately, we do not place summer researchers on the Ithaca or Weill Cornell campuses at this time. If you are interested in working with faculty on a non-Cornell Tech campus, we encourage you to contact them directly.

What are the working days and hours? The working days in the United States is Monday through Friday and you are expected to work 40 hours a week (or 8 hours per day). The standard work day is 9:00-17:00, but this may vary from lab to lab, which will be established during your first week of the program.

Logistics

What is included? Accepted summer researchers receive pay for their 40 hours of work per week ranging from $6,000-$7,500 for the summer and is paid bi-weekly. Additionally,  round trip transportation and health insurance will be provided.

How much does it cost to participate?

While summer researchers are paid, participants should be aware that their first pay check may not be available to them until 3 weeks after their arrival because of the bi-weekly pay schedule.

Additionally, participants are responsible for acquiring their own housing, which can range from $700-$2,000 per month depending on roommates and room-type. If possible, it is recommended to search apartments together as roommates.

The rental market in NYC can be very intense and daunting for first-timers, where oftentimes, searching for an apartment within three weeks of move-in is the norm with a sizeable amount of upfront costs. If you are looking for apartment-style living off campus, there are several resources you may turn to from services that focus on short-term stays to private subletting. Typically, a personal contact is the best and safest method to obtain an apartment, but staff might be able to offer some additional resources.

Can I bring a guest like a significant other with me? If accepted, the program sponsor a J-1 visa for you only. Any guests accompanying you must already have a visa to travel.

Application

By when do I need to have my recommendation letter submitted?

You should do your absolute best to have your referee submit his/her recommendation letter by the application deadline. Please make sure that you completed the registration of your referee in the tasks and that you submitted. The task should be "marked as complete." This will automatically send an email to your referee with a form and an upload option. You do not need to wait for your referee to complete their upload before submitting the application. Submit as soon as you are done.

There is a little bit of a grace period in which your referee has until the time your application starts to be reviewed by the committee, which of course, is unpredictable.

Can my referee send their letter to you directly?  The recommendation process includes an evaluation form that your referee will not be able to complete unless they submit via the application platform. It is not guaranteed that their email will be attached to your application if it is not through the application system. If they are having issues, please have them reach out to the help desk of ApplyNow.

I was unable to upload my transcript due to the recent security breach, how do I upload after I submitted my application?

For the summer of 2023 only, you will be asked to upload your transcript as a form of verification at the end of the evaluation process.

If you submitted a Hebrew transcript in lieu of an English one, we will make an exception for this year only to resend due to the security breach.

Can I update my submitted application? Due to the high volume of applications received, we will generally not accept updates. However, there may be some exceptions if we require more information from you. We will reach out directly.

Can you check the status of my application or confirm if my letter of recommendation was received? Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications received, we are unable to check on individual applications.
