Cost

Students are billed their regular Cornell college tuition. If your program charges a deposit, this will be paid by the Office of Global Learning on your behalf.

Many programs also charge program fees which are billed to Cornell and will be charged to your Bursar account. These fees are set by the program to cover housing and activities such as orientation and excursions, and depending on the program, may include mandatory health insurance and some meals.

Additional expenses are paid directly by the student prior to arrival or on-site. These may include visa, round-trip airfare, meals, books, and other personal expenses.

Budget Breakdown

The Office of Global Learning provides the below estimated budget so you can understand the costs of your program and how they will be paid. The estimated budget indicates which study abroad costs are billable through Cornell, through the host institution, or out of pocket.

  • Charges that will appear on your bursar bill:
    • Your regular Cornell tuition: In-State, Out-of-State, or Endowed
    • Program Fees: these typically cover non-tuition expenses such as housing, excursions, activities, mandatory insurance, and orientation expenses.
  • Estimated additional costs paid directly by the student, such as:
    • Round-trip airfare, visa, immunizations (if required)
    • Housing and meals (if not billed by provider to Cornell)
    • Books, local transportation, and other personal expenses

Official Budget

The Office of Global Learning will send you your official budget via email in May for fall/year students and in November for spring students. If you share the email address(es) of your parent or guardian in your application, we will send them a copy as well. This is the budget that the Financial Aid Office will use to calculate your aid package for your semester/year abroad, if relevant. See below for information on financial aid and visit the Finances page for more information.

Financial Aid

If you are eligible for financial aid when you are on campus, subject to the same conditions, you will maintain your aid eligibility when you study abroad for a semester or year. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) will remain the same for the academic year.

Aid awards are re-packaged to accommodate the total expected cost of your semester/year abroad, using the estimated budget prepared by Global Learning. If your budgeted costs are more than the cost of a semester/year at Cornell, your aid package will likely be increased. Likewise, if your budgeted costs are less than a semester/year at Cornell, aid will be appropriately reduced to reflect your decreased need.

The work-study allocation for a semester/year abroad is converted to a loan. Students have the option of accepting or declining the loan, but in situations where loans are declined there will not be an offer of replacement aid.
