Overview
The ILR Undergraduate Research Fellows Program provides ILR undergraduates with the opportunity to work with a professor during academic year 2025-2026. This program was developed in response to numerous requests we have received from undergraduates for research opportunities and in the hope that it will facilitate one-on-one student/faculty interactions. Students participating in this program will receive an hourly pay of $17.00 per hour for up to 10 hours a week. Awards will be made on a one semester basis with renewal possible for the second semester. Students may not earn credit for the research project during the semester or year they are being paid as a research assistant.
Navigating Scrutiny at the International Labor Organization
This ongoing research project aims to examine variation in how governments respond to having their country’s case discussed by the Committee on the Application of Standards (CAS) for violation of fundamental ILO conventions. Every year, the CAS identifies around 24 individual cases for discussion at the annual International Labor Conference (ILC). The undergraduate research fellow would assist with compiling a dataset that systematically documents countries’ responses to CAS discussions on cases relating to ILO conventions 87 and 98, on the right to collective bargaining and freedom of association. The dataset utilizes the published proceedings CAS discussions and classifies countries’ responses based on three categories: conciliatory, accommodationist, and confrontational. It also includes information on the position of workers’ and employers’ representatives from the country whose case is being discussed as well as other countries, and the position of other governments. – with Professor Dina Bishara
