Overview

Opportunity Description

The Yang-Tan Institute on Employment and Disability in Cornell University’s ILR School conducts a combination of research and outreach. Our mission is to advance knowledge, policies, and practice that enhance equal opportunities for all people with disabilities. Our research, training, and technical resources expand knowledge about disability inclusion, leading to positive change. Our 62-person transdisciplinary team focuses on the meaningful inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life.

The student will support the NSF research team in a) reviewing the research literature on related topic areas, b) transcribing interview data, and c) analyzing qualitative data. The NSF Neurodiversity Project (Navigating Pathways to STEM Careers: Insights from Autistic College Students, Employers, and Career Counselors) is housed at the Yang-Tan Institute on Employment and Disability, an extended education, research, and technical assistance program of a national and regional scope that provides information on disability and the workplace.

The student will assist the NSF project in a) building a robust and comprehensive knowledge basis of all prior research literature found in relevant content areas including pre-employment processes for autistic people and participatory action research processes; b) transcribing interview data; and c) coding interview transcripts using a pre-established codebook, in collaboration with the academic researchers on the project.

The student will work with the NSF Neurodiversity Project research team to:

  • Participate in and take notes during regular team meetings.
  • Conduct literature reviews and annotated bibliographies on participatory action research, neuroinclusive interview processes in STEM hiring and careers, and other identified content areas
  • Transcribe interviews
  • Support with data analysis (e.g., coding of interview transcripts)

This research position requires careful attention to detail and the ability to work independently. This position also requires strong communication skills. Computer knowledge and experience with MS Word and MS Excel. Knowledge in MAXQDA, a mixed-methods software program, or a willingness to learn how to use this software program for qualitative data analysis. An ILR student with understanding and experience in the disability sector, specifically neurodivergence, is preferred but not required. Candidates should be able to effectively manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and communicate needs with supervisory staff.

This is a hybrid opportunity.
