Overview

Opportunity Description

The Worker Institute at Cornell engages in research and education on contemporary labor issues, to generate innovative thinking and solutions to problems related to work, economy and society. The institute brings together researchers, educators and students with practitioners in labor, business and policymaking to confront growing economic and social inequalities, in the interests of working people and their families. A core value of the Worker Institute is that collective representation and workers' rights are vital to a fair economy, robust democracy and just society.

The summer research fellow will work across a series of programs at the Worker Institute. The first is a mapping exercise for a project. This would require “strategic external analysis of” data on non-profits that service low-income families in the NY-NJ metro region. A student would conduct research on the number of non-profit social justice organizations in the region and then map them out. In addition, support on project exploring immigration status and workers’ claims would require support on the literature review.

The next project is exploring the degree of intimate partner violence and its effect on the workplace for a large international union. Support would include finalizing a literature review, support on survey design, implementation and cleaning of data.

A third project includes support coding qualitative data for a study exploring the relationship between disability, accommodation, home care workers and their ability to support care receivers integrating into the labor market.

Some experience conducting a literature review; some experience coding data (though not a requirement); attention to detail; quality writing ability.
