Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network

ILR High Road New York is a statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic engagement and leadership through economic justice, evidence-based policy, and strategic development that creates opportunity for community members to share in prosperity.  The Summer 2024 New York City (NYC) High Road Fellowship Program will run from June 3rd to July 26th.  Students intern in person with various NYC partner organizations and will participate in weekly cohort workshops focused on critical reflection and peer-to-peer collaboration and networking and learning opportunities with guest speakers will be offered at ILR's NYC office on Lexington Avenue. All interns will be paid and need-based subsidized housing will be available

The Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network Summer Internship 2024 is an opportunity to embed within a dynamic team of organizers and community education practitioners to advance domestic worker rights and improve domestic employer practices. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow seasoned organizers, participate in campaign actions, develop materials and engage the public in important conversations around care and care work.

Representative activities include:

● Reaching out to Hand in Hand members to invite them to attend events and engage in campaigns for domestic worker rights
● Street canvassing in support of critical legislation to protect domestic workers and/or make care more affordable and accessible to all
● Surveying New York City residents on the issues that matter most to them when it comes to the care economy
● Working with Hand in Hand members to develop care stories and testimonies in support of priority issues
● Supporting seasoned organizers in delivering educational workshops to a range of audiences of care consumers and employers of domestic workers including new parents, aging adults, people with disabilities and their family members, and employers of house cleaners
● Support relationship building with local elected officials to share material and help them understand the unique audience and constituency of employers of domestic workers

Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network is a national organization of employers of nannies, house cleaners and home attendants with a strong chapter in New York City and a growing presence throughout the NYC metro area including in the State of New Jersey. Our mission is to build a just and caring economy starting in our homes and communities. We support employers of nannies, house cleaners, home care workers, and attendants, their families and allies to understand that their homes are workplaces. We organize people to demand dignity and fairness for domestic workers, and to win public investment in care for families, people with disabilities and older adults.

Hand in Hand has a two-pronged approach to movement building for domestic worker justice and related issues including women’s and immigrants’ rights, and racial and economic justice. Hand in Hand mobilizes employers in solidarity with domestic workers to win legislative change at all levels of government. Hand in Hand also educates employers with the aim of influencing employer practices and changing the work experience of domestic workers in their work settings.

Hand in Hand has 15 staff across the country with 4 in New York State including 2 in New York City. The New York City Chapter collaborates closely with a number of local partners including the NYC Coalition for Domestic Work, NDWA, Adikaar and the Carroll Gardens Association as well as other grassroots organizing groups including Make the Road New York. NYC HiH also has a deep pool of grassroots leaders who attend events and campaign actions and take leadership roles in educating employers around best employer practices.

Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network office is located at 45 Broadway, Suite 302. New York, NY 10006.
