Opportunity Description

ILR peer mentors serve as a supportive role model and resource to incoming students in the Introduction to ILR course – ILRID 1510. Mentors will be available as an approachable resource to respond to incoming students’ needs by actively listening, providing relevant information, and making appropriate referrals. Staff in the Office of Student Services and Peer Mentor Leads will be available to support you throughout the semester. 

Qualifications

ILR students applying for a peer mentor position must:

  • Have been enrolled in the ILR School for at least one full-time (12 credit) semester [seniors can only apply if they will be enrolled as a student in the fall (December graduates)]

  • Possess a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Make the minimum commitment to the program for the fall semester, estimated 3 hours each week

  • Be able to attend Friday sessions

  • Be available for weekly training sessions 

Position Description 

The ILR Peer Mentor Program builds a sense of community for students to transition into Cornell University and the ILR School. Selected through a comprehensive process, mentors are undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors or seniors) who are excited to connect and establish rapport with new students. 

Mentors must commit to all training. Mentors will welcome new students during orientation, participate in class discussions with mentees weekly, organize a series of activities to support community building in discussion sections, will be available to answer questions, and stay in communication with mentees through the fall semester. 

Mentors collaborate with faculty and TAs to take attendance and send weekly communication to students in their assigned section. Mentors will participate in student panels when necessary, among other duties as assigned. 

Responsibilities 

  • Initiate communication with peer mentees via email
  • Attend training sessions in person (TBD)
  • Complete Certified Peer Education (CPE) training (virtual) 
  • Attend Friday sessions of ILRID 1510
  • Take attendance at sessions 
  • Communicate with faculty, TAs, and staff for weekly assignments and topics 
  • Follow-up with weekly communication to students
  • Provide reinforcement support of the course content
  • Keep up to date on course information 
  • Attend an end of semester debrief session
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation 

  • $16/hour
  • ~ 3 hours per week
