Opportunity Description
ILR peer mentors serve as a supportive role model and resource to incoming students in the Introduction to ILR course – ILRID 1510. Mentors will be available as an approachable resource to respond to incoming students’ needs by actively listening, providing relevant information, and making appropriate referrals. Peer Mentors are supported by the Office of Student Services and Peer Mentor Leaders over the duration of the program.
Qualifications
Candidates for the peer mentor position must:
- Have been enrolled in the ILR School for at least one full-time (12 credit) semester and be enrolled as a student in ILR for the fall 2025 term. [seniors can apply if they will be enrolled as a student in the fall (December graduates)]
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Be available to commitment to the program for the duration of the fall semester, estimated 3 hours each week
- Be available to attend weekly Friday sections and weekly training sessions.
Position Description
- The ILR Peer Mentor builds a sense of community, serve as role models, and provide support and guidance for students in Introduction to ILR. They are excited to connect with students and establish a positive rapport with their peers. Peer Mentors go the extra mile to understand resources and programs within ILR and beyond, to ensure they are equipped to appropriately refer their mentees to opportunities, services and resources.
- Peer Mentors must commit to all training. Mentors will welcome new students during orientation, participate weekly in class discussions with mentees, organize a series of activities to support community building in discussion sections, be available to answer questions, and stay in communication with mentees throughout the fall semester.
- Peer Mentors collaborate with TAs to plan for weekly sections, take attendance, and send weekly communication to students in their assigned section. Mentors will participate in student panels, plan for community building activities, and perform other duties related to supporting the mission of the program.
Responsibilities
- Build community with in assigned section
- Become knowledgeable of campus programs and resources
- Support new students in their transition to ILR
- Maintain communication with mentees
- Attend all training sessions in person
- Complete the Certified Peer Education (CPE) training (virtual, in August)
- Attend weekly Friday sections of ILRID 1510 Introduction to ILR
- Assist with section attendance
- Communicate with faculty, TAs and staff, as necessary and appropriate
- Provide reinforcement of course content
- Keep up to date on course information
- Participate in end of semester debrief and assessment
- Perform other duties relevant to the mission the program, as assigned
Compensation
- $16/hour
- ~ 3 hours per week
