ILR High Road Ithaca Fellowship
Legal Assistance of Western New York

ILR High Road New York is statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic & community engagement and engaged leadership. The High Road Ithaca Program offers students paid community engaged internships with partner organizations committed to social and environmental justice, diversity and equity, access and education in Ithaca and surrounding areas during the fall or spring semesters. Students work 5-10 hours a week and participate in critical reflection activities throughout the semester.

LawNY® is a non-profit law firm that provides free legal assistance to people in 14 counties in western New York. They provide services to 14 counties in western New York including: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates Counties. 

LawNY Reentry Project’s Mandate: “Our service population is justice involved persons who are encountering barriers to employment, professional licensing, housing, and exercising their civil rights due to their criminal records. Our goal is to address the legal issues and/or obstacles and/or unlawful discrimination justice involved persons face that often cause undue hardship and which are often the same causes of recidivism.”

Intern will assist with cases concerning sealing applications and employment discrimination lawsuits. The fellow will conduct interviews with clients as well as draft and review motions to be filed, employment discriminations plants, intern will take notes and submit complaints to DHR. 

An intern's willingness to learn, understand and defend a client without personal judgment will make them a successful candidate for this position.
