ILR High Road New York is statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic & community engagement and leadership. The High Road Ithaca Program offers students paid community engaged internships with partner organizations committed to social and environmental justice, diversity and equity, access and education in Ithaca and surrounding areas during the fall or spring semesters. Students work 5-10 hours a week and participate in critical reflection activities throughout the semester.

LawNY® is a non-profit law firm that provides free legal assistance to people in 14 counties in western New York. They provide services to 14 counties in western New York including: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates Counties.

LawNY Reentry Project’s Mandate: “Our service population is justice involved persons who are encountering barriers to employment, professional licensing, housing, and exercising their civil rights due to their criminal records. Our goal is to address the legal issues and/or obstacles and/or unlawful discrimination justice involved persons face that often cause undue hardship and which are often the same causes of recidivism.”

What LawNY’s Reentry Project does: 

The LawNY Project’s focus is on what is loosely defined as “Collateral Sanctions” or “Collateral Consequences of Criminal Convictions”. Collateral Consequences or Collateral Sanctions often include such things; as denial of public or private employment, denial of public officer-ship, ineligibility for licensure, permits or contracts, disqualification from public benefits, public education, or participation in programs, and elimination or impairment of civil rights, such as serving in juries. o For the purposes of LawNY’s reentry Project private discrimination is considered a Collateral Consequence that falls within the parameters of the Project’s scope.

Intern will assist with Reentry Service Community Clinics, Criminal Record Sealing motions, Certificates of Rehabilitation application, and other direct reentry services.
