ILR High Road Ithaca Fellowship
Community Justice Center
Reimagining Public Safety of Tompkins County and City of Ithaca

ILR High Road New York is statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic & community engagement and leadership. The High Road Ithaca Program offers students paid community engaged internships with partner organizations committed to social and environmental justice, diversity and equity, access and education in Ithaca and surrounding areas during the fall or spring semesters. Students work 5-10 hours a week and participate in critical reflection activities throughout the semester.

The Community Justice Center (CJC) is a collaboration between the City of Ithaca and Tompkins County to oversee the implementation of the joint plans for the Reimagining Public Safety Initiative. The CJC is designed to lead and complete the work associated with the recommendations that were created to reflect a significant vision for change. This change is based on Executive Order 203 established in the wake of the George Floyd murder.

Initiatives and activities led by CJC include Community Healing Sessions, Community Resource Hubs, Anti-bias/Unconscious Bias Officer training and support for police and deputies, and for the un-armed civilian responders, in which CJC has been tasked with identifying training and education resources and developing curricula that upgrade responders’ ability to assess situations and respond calmly, respectfully, with compassion and professionalism to community members. The Center also has created the CJC data dashboard that homes visualizations that include calls for service to the 911 dispatch center, law enforcement engagement by the Ithaca Police Department and Tompkins County Sheriff's Office, arrests and representation, and case outcomes and alternatives to incarceration. The dashboard also links to public data made available by the Ithaca Police Department, Tompkins County Sheriff's Office, and Tompkins County District Attorney.

The CJC Fellow will work closely with CJC Project Director and the Data Analyst and assist with social media presence that will require regular updates on current work. The intern will also conduct research that will be used to create a database of local, regional and National Social Justice Funding opportunities and assist with the various center initiatives listed above. The ideal candidate will meet in person weekly (although some work can be done remotely),
have their own transportation, and have a strong interest in social justice and public safety issues.

The CJC office is located in the Tompkins County Health and Mental Health Department, 201 East Green St., Ithaca.
