Directed Reading (4000):
Designed for study that primarily involves library research and independent study.

Empirical Research (4010):
Designed for study that primarily involves data collection and analysis, or laboratory/studio-based projects.

Supervised Fieldwork (4020):
Intended for study that combines active participation in a community setting with critical reflection through reading, writing, and discussion. Academic credit is awarded for the integration of theory and practice.

Teaching Apprenticeship (4030):
Intended for study that focuses on teaching methods and assisting faculty with instruction. Students must have demonstrated strong performance in both the subject area and their overall academic program.

Further Information:

  • A maximum of 12 credits of special study coursework (in Human Ecology or other colleges) will count toward the 120 credit graduation requirement. Additional special studies credits may be taken but will not be applied.
  • Students may not earn credit more than once for serving as a Teaching Apprentice (4030) in the same course. Additionally, students may enroll in, and TA, the same course in the same semester. Note: 4030 does not fulfill any major requirements and may not exceed 5 credits per semester.
  • For students who matriculated into Human Ecology prior to August 2024: Up to three credits of 4000–4020 (excluding 4030) may count towards the "credit outside the major" requirement, provided the special study course is taken in a department outside the student’s major.
