Overview

Opportunity Description

Host Organization: University of Zambia
Location: Lusaka, Zambia

The University of Zambia (UNZA) is a Cornell Global Hubs partner and the country’s oldest and largest public university. Located in Lusaka, UNZA offers programs in medicine, agriculture, law, engineering, and public health.

As an intern at UNZA, you will work on a research project under the supervision of a faculty member at the University of Zambia for eight weeks during the summer. In addition to the research, you'll be immersed in the culture and vibrancy of Lusaka.

During summer 2026, students will be able to pursue research in the following areas:

  • Governance and public policy: Research social and political change in Zambia and across southern Africa with law professor O'Brien Kaaba.
  • Natural and applied sciences: Work with professor Evans Kaimoyo from the School of Natural and Applied Sciences. You'll contribute to a project about antifungal activity of bacteria isolated from infected rice tissue.

Successful student candidates will have an interest in Africa and experience in the field that they have chosen. You will work independently and with others, so adaptability to a new environment is important.

Funding

All Global Interns receive an award totaling at least $3,000 for airfare, transportation, and living expenses. A portion of the stipend may be paid directly to the in-country host to support housing, food, and local transportation.
