Overview

Opportunity Description

Internships with non-profit and government agencies are great experiences, but sometimes they can't afford to pay you much. If you and the employer both qualify for the DYO program, you can earn your summer Federal Work Study allotment for that internship even though it is off-campus. This program can be a great hiring incentive, because the employer only has to pay 25% of your wages, and FWS pays the other 75%.

Some information is included below, but please review the website linked at right for more detailed information.

Student Eligibility

  • Must be Federal Work-Study (FWS) eligible during the current academic year.
  • Returning to Cornell as an undergraduate, or participating in affiliated academic programs off-campus in the fall semester (ex: Cornell in Washington)
  • Cannot be registered for 6 or more credit hours of summer classes

Job or Internship Eligibility

  • Internship must be with a nonprofit employer or government agency.
  • The job must be located in the United States.
  • Employment must be for at least 30 hours per week.
  • If your internship is "virtual," you must have regular supervision via phone, video, or in-person meetings.
  • Employer must pay an hourly wage equal to or greater than local, state, or federal minimum wage (whichever is higher).
  • Position must last at least 8 weeks.

Restrictions

Due to Federal or Cornell regulations, we cannot consider jobs or employers:

  • with a direct religious or partisan political affiliation
  • for students to work in their family-owned business
  • with a lobbying organization (or lobbying function within an organization)
  • with an employer that restricts its membership
  • with the U.S. Department of Education or U.S. Department of Justice
  • located in a foreign country

Compensation

The typical student earns between $4000 - $5000, paid directly through Cornell payroll systems. The employer doesn't have to pay their 25% until after the internship is complete.
