Overview

Opportunity Description

We are looking for several undergraduate students to collaborate on an interdisciplinary research project that will assess how local deer populations and management strategies affect habitats at Cornell and in the surrounding communities. We will not only assess ecological impacts, but also how deer impacts and deer management are perceived by local residents in neighboring municipalities through social science assessments.

We will be using a combination of ecological and social science methods such as browse intensity on indicator plants and questionnaires to probe human attitudes.  Students are expected to start engagement during the fall 2021 semester by assisting in seed collection and propagation of plants, while also participating in development and implementation of a social science questionnaire.  Students are expected to be work full time in active ecological and social science inquiries in summer 2022.  Students will be engaged with members of the Blossey lab group (see: invasiveplants.net), Cornell Botanic Gardens’ Natural Area staff, local municipal leaders, and residents of towns surrounding the campus.

5-10 hours/week (may include occasional weekend work) during the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters which may extend into fall 2022. The position is full time (39 hours/week) for summer of 2022. Position requires Ithaca residency. Time off can be arranged. The hourly pay rate will be $13.50.

Where appropriate, students may consider developing honors theses and contribute or lead scientific papers. Students are expected to present their findings to town boards, undergraduate research seminars and other appropriate outlets. Students are encouraged to attend the weekly meetings of the Blossey lab (time TBD).

To apply for these positions, please send an email to Bernd Blossey (bb22@cornell.edu) and Todd Bittner (todd.bittner@cornell.edu) with the subject heading EG deer.  Please include a statement of interest (1-2 paragraphs), a resume with classes taken, previous work experience and contact information for two references with your application.  Review of applications will begin 13 September 2021.
