Opportunity Description

CALS is offering a unique opportunity for CALS students to internationalize their academics and gain profession experience through coursework focused on global issues and a semester-long internship in New York City. This program was introduced to CALS by a CALS faculty member and is administered and operated through SUNY New Paltz. Although a domestic program, it will add an international dimension to your degree, challenge you academically, facilitate the development of new skills, and enhance your personal growth and self-confidence. 

Transfer students should consult with the CALS Student Services Office prior to applying to the program to determine eligibility regarding credits.

What is unique about this program?

This program offers students the opportunity to intern for 20-25 hours per week with major international non-governmental organizations, foundations, and non-profits such as:

  • Clinton Global Initiative
  • Council on Foreign Relations
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • Human Rights First
  • International Rescue Committee
  • Rainforest Foundation
  • Seeds of Peace
  • United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs
  • United Nations Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Central Emergency Relief Fund

And many others!

In addition to the internship (6 to 9-credits), students take a 3-credit Global Affairs seminar with Dr. Ilgu Ozler, and develop a research project related to their internship work under supervision (3 credits). Through consortium agreement, students are able to participate in full-time (15-credit) experience without taking a leave of absence from Cornell and receive transfer credit from SUNY New Paltz.

The city that never sleeps, New York City is an incredible place to be a student and an intern. Home to thousands of international organizations, New York City is the ideal place to gain valuable work experience and also to network with professionals in the field of Global Development. The program is beneficial for CALS students who are particularly interested in international relations.

How do I apply?

  • Meet with the Program Advisor

    • The Program Advisor is happy to meet with each student to go over specific program details and answer individuals academic questions related to the program.  
  • Click the green apply button (there is an application preview button for those interested in what is on the application-by clicking apply, you will start an application to the program)
    • Already met with the Program Advisor or is it close to the application deadline and you can't get in to see the advisor? That's okay. Click the green apply button and start the Cornell application process so you don't miss any deadlines. 
  • Click Submit
    • Once you've completed all of the application requirements, click submit. The Program Advisor will review your application. 
  • Complete A SUNY New Paltz Internship Application
    • In addition to the Cornell application, you will need to complete the host institutions application. The program advisor will nominate accepted students to SUNY New Paltz and you will then receive the application link.
