Important Application Notes

At UCL, you are not applying to a central admissions office, but rather to a specific department that will decide whether or not to make you an offer.  The following departments at UCL have higher GPA requirements and other academic criteria for admission.  Please note this as you proceed with your application:

  • Computer Science, Law, and Planning are NOT accepting applications from visiting students
  • Economics requires at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and successful applicants will have previously completed (and received an 'A' in) intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, intermediate calculus and statistics.  Level 2 and 3 Economics modules are only available to students admitted directly to this subject area.
  • English requires at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and two to four college level literature courses completed.  English Language and Literature modules are only available to students admitted into this subject area (this does not include writing courses).  The department also restricts students either to taking their entire course load within the department or only taking two modules.
  • Neuroscience is looking for a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and has very limited space available for visiting students.
  • Students admitted to Fine Art must take their entire credit load within this area.  Only art majors or minors are admitted.
  • History of Art only admits history of art majors.
  • Architecture modules are only available to students admitted directly to this subject area.  Only architecture majors are admitted.
  • Political Science requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5 with a strong background in political studies courses.
  • History requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5 with a strong background in history courses.
  • Chemistry requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a strong background in chemistry courses.
  • Management will accept full-year and spring semester students only.  A cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 is required.
  • Mathematics will accept full year and spring semester students only.

For additional information, refer to the UCL website for subjects with limited capacity (different than the above restrictions), full list of subjects, and the Academics tab.

General Requirements

  • be in good academic standing
  • be in good disciplinary standing
  • be able to study abroad and graduate on time
  • meet the requirements of the program for admission
  • meet college requirements for approval

College-specific Requirements

Colleges may have specific requirements for study abroad such as GPA, prior study at Cornell, ability to study abroad in your final semester, etc. Learn about your college's policies.

For example, your college may have a higher GPA requirement for approval than what is required by the program itself.  Most notably, students in Arts & Sciences must fulfill language and area study requirements prior to studying abroad for a semester.
