Description

The St. Andrew’s Society initiated this Scholarship in 1956, at its 200th anniversary. The Scholarship supports two Scottish-American students from prestigious US schools to study in Scotland for one year. Candidates must be endorsed by their undergraduate institution.

Eligibility

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Graduating Cornell senior
  • Demonstratable Scottish descent
  • Demonstratable financial need

Benefits

  • Approximately $35,000 to be used for tuition, board, transportation, and other expenses. Please note: this award is unlikely to fully cover all study- and travel-related expenses.

  • Clarity of purpose in pursuing graduate study and future career

  • 1-page resume
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Short-answer essays (2)
    1. ​​​​​​​Why do you wish to continue your education past the current year? (200 words max)
    2. Why do you wish to study in Scotland and how will this study contribute to your overall goals? (200 words max)
  • Scholarship application form
  • Two letters of recommendation

Dos and Don’ts:

  • Do: Propose an academic program that’s a logical extension of your undergraduate studies
  • Do: Heavily research the details of the academic program you propose, and include the most exciting/relevant aspects of that program in your application essay(s)
  • Don’t: Propose programs for which you don’t meet the basic qualifications

Application Review Process:

The selection committee endorses two applicants in November. Endorsees then apply directly to St. Andrew’s Society of New York. Six finalists attend an interview and luncheon in New York City. Two scholarships are awarded shortly thereafter.
