Opportunity Description

Please note: The Marshall Scholarship requires a Cornell endorsement to be nominated to the national competition. In order to be considered for an endorsement, a candidate must submit all application materials to the Office of Fellowships by 1pm ET on August 1, 2025

Founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament and named in honor of US Secretary of State George C. Marshall, the Marshall Scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan) instituted in 1947, and they express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts. Up to forty Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually to U.S. citizens for post-graduate study in almost any discipline leading to the award of a British university degree.

Applicants must receive endorsement from their undergraduate academic institution. Cornell endorsement is given by the Cornell Endorsement Committee for the Marshall Scholarship and coordinated by the Office of Fellowships.

Description:

Founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament and named in honor of US Secretary of State George C. Marshall, the Marshall Scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan) instituted in 1947, and they express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts. It is hoped that as future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars will strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments, and their institutions.

Up to fifty Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually to U.S. citizens for post-graduate study in almost any discipline leading to the award of a British university degree. Traditional Marshall Scholarships are for two years of study. A limited number of One Year Scholarships are also available (for degree programs of 11 or 12 months' duration; shorter one-year degree programs are ineligible for the One Year Marshall, but may be pursued as part of a Traditional two-year Marshall).
