Opportunity Description

ILR High Road New York
OPEN DOORS

ILR High Road New York is a statewide program that aims to teach ILR students practical methods for civic engagement and leadership through economic justice, evidence-based policy, and strategic development that creates opportunity for community members to share in prosperity.  The Summer 2024 New York City (NYC) High Road Fellowship Program will run from June 3rd to July 26th.  Students intern in person with various NYC partner organizations and will participate in weekly cohort workshops focused on critical reflection and peer-to-peer collaboration and networking and learning opportunities with guest speakers will be offered at ILR's NYC office on Lexington Avenue. All interns will be paid and need-based subsidized housing will be available

OPEN DOORS is in search of an intern interested in working at an arts-and-disability justice non-profit organization, and who is eager to learn about long-term-care advocacy and reform. During this internship, you will work on creative projects and be given the opportunity to practice leadership skills in a disability-led startup environment.

The Program Assistant is the primary support for OPEN DOORS daily functions. They report to the Program Associate, working alongside them and the Reality Poets on new and existing programs and events. The Program Assistant will lead several weekly meetings, and will support Reality Poets in creating content, such as helping record our podcast.

OPEN DOORS is an arts-and-justice initiative under the Center for Transformative Action. Our mission is to invest in the creativity and leadership of Black and brown people who use wheelchairs and inspire action for safer, more just communities. Their work centers the artistic and professional development of the Reality Poets—an artist collective of current and former residents of Coler Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center on Roosevelt Island in NYC. Guided
by the Reality Poets’ lived experience and vision, they collaborate with artists and organizations on creative projects that support disability justice, community building, and gun violence prevention. OPEN DOORS is currently making a feature-length documentary film, Fire Through Dry Grass, which will premiere on PBS. The film follows the Reality Poets’ harrowing year on lockdown inside their NYC nursing home during the pandemic, and their powerful journey toward movement leaders.

OPEN DOORS is based on Roosevelt Island. The ideal candidate will commute to Coler nursing home once a week. Coler Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center is located on 900 Main St, New York, NY 10044 on Roosevelt Island.
