Opportunity Description

Interested in the political and economic challenges facing Sub-Saharan Africa? Or perhaps West African music and dance?

What is unique about this program?

  • Directly enroll at the University of Ghana in a wide range of courses, including African studies, social work, politics, economics, religion, and West African performing arts.
  • Get to know life in West Africa by living with a Ghanaian family, volunteering with a local organization, doing an internship, or simply observing day to day life
  • Experience firsthand the issues challenging Ghana today by enrolling in the CIEE Development Studies Track
  • Receive extensive and ongoing support from CIEE Staff and CIEE-trained University of Ghana “U-Pal” students, as well as CIEE led travel excursions to different parts of the country
  • Enjoy CIEE-led travel excursions to different parts of the country

Why Legon, Ghana?

One of Africa’s most stable countries, vibrant Ghana offers a rich cultural heritage and fascinating history of politics and social change to explore. The program offers wonderful opportunities in the classroom and in the community for students to explore critical issues relate to public health, development, and African history and culture.

Legon is a university town just northeast of the city center in the Accra Metropolis District. The sprawling University of Ghana campus is ranked as the 7th best university in Africa. This relatively well-heeled suburb is known for its schools, malls, and restaurants.  Beyond campus, the equatorial region includes rainforests, wildlife parks, and pristine beaches to explore.

How do I apply?

Applying to study abroad is a two-step process. You may complete both steps simultaneously, but the Cornell approval process must be complete before your program advisor in the Office of Global Learning can submit any approval or nomination to the program.

  1. For Cornell Approval, click on the "Apply" button on this webpage. Applications are approved by the Office of Global Learning on a rolling basis until the application deadline listed on this page.
  2. For Program Admission, complete an external application directly on the program’s webpage, using the link in the “Snapshot” section. (Note: This deadline may be in advance of the general Cornell deadline for approval. Many programs fill by rolling admission.
