Overview

Opportunity Description

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offers students a unique opportunity to excel in a stimulating intellectual environment among a cosmopolitan group of students in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

What is unique about this program?

A comprehensive research university with a global outlook, CUHK distinguishes itself from other local universities in its firmly rooted Chinese culture. It offers students the chance to learn about China, its culture, and the language spoken by one fifth of the world’s population at a time when Chinese is an increasingly essential skill in our interconnected global economy.

Each year, CUHK welcomes nearly 1,000 students from both partner and non-partner institutions to study for either a single term or the entire academic year. CUHK offers undergraduate and postgraduate level courses under the faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Science. Overseas exchange and study-abroad students can take most undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Cantonese is the main spoken language in Hong Kong, but CUHK is a multilingual university, with English or Putonghua (Mandarin) used as the languages of instruction for many courses.

What is unique about Hong Kong?

Our home in Hong Kong, Asia’s World City, offers students a truly international experience in an environment where east meets west. At CUHK, students from more than 50 countries live and study together on a culturally integrated campus, which is the largest and most scenic in the territory. The international horizons of students are further strengthened by a host of opportunities for exchanges as well as learning and working opportunities abroad and in mainland China throughout the years.

How do I choose among programs?

  • See the Office of Global Learning’s “Selecting a Program” page for information on program types and considerations
  • Use the search features on the Experience Cornell  Opportunities page to filter for programs approved by your college, and by particular subject areas
  • Go to the “Get Advice” page for information on drop-in advising hours, scheduling an advising appointment, returned student contacts, and college advisors for study abroad
  • Find out about upcoming events, check out FAQs, and read stories from returned study abroad students

How do I apply?

Applying to study abroad is a two-step process. You may complete both steps simultaneously, but the Cornell approval process must be complete before your program advisor in the Office of Global Learning can submit any approval or nomination to the program.

  1. For Cornell Approval, click on the "Apply" button on this webpage. Applications are approved by the Office of Global Learning on a rolling basis until the application deadline listed on this page.
  2. For Program Admission, complete an external application directly on the program’s webpage, using the link in the “Snapshot” section. (Note: This deadline may be in advance of the general Cornell deadline for approval. Many programs fill by rolling admission.)
