Overview
E3 Research & Learning Assistantships
Undergraduate research and learning assistantships may be eligible to fulfill the E3 Learning Milestone requirement. Before beginning a research project or learning assistantship, students must confirm with their faculty supervisor that the experience meets E3 requirements and has been approved as an E3-eligible opportunity.
Important: Experiences that were not identified as E3-eligible before they begin cannot be retroactively approved after completion. Students must establish eligibility and complete the E3 application process prior to starting their experience.
Through E3 Research and Learning Assistantships, students apply classroom knowledge in real-world contexts, engage in meaningful learning experiences, and reflect on how their work contributes to their academic, professional, and personal development.
Eligibility Requirements
To fulfill the E3 Learning Milestone, the experience must:
- Involve the practical application of knowledge in a real-world setting.
- Include clearly defined learning outcomes established before the experience begins.
- Incorporate discussion of learning goals with the faculty supervisor prior to the start of the experience.
- Include a reflection activity or assignment that allows students to demonstrate their learning and achievement of E3 outcomes.
E3 Learning Outcomes
Upon completing an E3-eligible research or learning assistantship, students should be able to:
- Connect disciplinary and scholarly learning with the practical application of that knowledge.
- Explain how the experience contributes to and supports their learning goals at Cornell.
- Describe how they engaged with, contributed to, or served a community or cause greater than themselves.
Application Information
Before submitting an application, students should be prepared to provide:
- Supervisor name and email address
- Experience start and end dates
- Course information (for Learning Assistantships)
- Research project description (for Research experiences)
- Responsibilities and expected activities
- Personal goals for the experience
- Additional learning outcomes, if applicable
- A reflection plan developed with the supervisor, including how learning outcomes and goals will be assessed
After submission, the faculty supervisor will review the application and determine whether to approve the experience. Once approved, if the student is completing the experience for credit they will receive an enrollment code to enroll in the appropriate E3 section. Reminder emails will be sent to both the student and supervisor approximately two weeks before the experience end date.
