GPA Requirements:

Minimum GPA: 3.00

A CALS undergraduate wishing to enroll in the honors program must have completed a minimum of 55 credits, at least 30 while at Cornell. Additionally, the student must have a cumulative Cornell GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of entry, unless otherwise noted by a particular program.

Interested students are encouraged to make arrangements and discuss research ideas with a faculty member during their junior year. Students are required to submit applications and thesis proposals to the appropriate office in accordance with their program area procedures and deadlines. Knowing the deadlines and submission procedures for a particular program area is the student’s responsibility.


Application submission:

All students should review full program details at Research Honors Program Requirements website. Submit your application via the link below with the following exceptions: 

  • Applications for Biological Sciences are available via the Biological Sciences research honors website or come by the Office of Undergraduate Biology, 216 Stimson Hall to discuss in person.
  • Applications for Biology & Society are available in the Biology & Society office, 303 Morrill Hall.
  • Applications for Communication are available via the Communication research honors website.
  • Applications to the Environment & Sustainability (E&S) Research Honors Program are available via the E&S research honors website. The deadline to apply to the E&S Research Honors Program is the end of the 2nd week of September. Senior who missed this deadline should reach out to the program at environment@cornell.edu.
  • Applicants for the Social Science program (including applied economics and management, global development, international agriculture and rural development, biometry and statistics, and information science) should submit a brief proposal through the Experience Portal but must also submit a more detailed proposal to the Social Science Chair, Dr. Tom Hirschl (tah4) by mid-September of their Senior Year. Details on the specific dates and requirements for the full proposal can be found in the Social Science program description.
  • Applications for students in all other program areas must be completed and submitted online via the Experience Cornell website. To complete the application form, electronic signatures of approval are required from both the faculty research mentor and research honors program area chair.
  • The CALS Research Honors Program Committee gives final approval of all qualified applicants, notifying them of their official enrollment in the honors program by late November.
