Opportunity Description

Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education (BSME) is a study abroad program in Budapest, Hungary, designed for undergraduates and recent graduates interested in the learning and teaching of secondary mathematics.

To complete the BSME application, the following materials are required and will be deployed to you electronically once you start an application by clicking the "APPLY NOW" button:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation (see below)
  • Official transcript(s) from all colleges/universities attended (sent directly from Registrar’s Office or equivalent)

Two letters of recommendation are required, according to the following guidelines:

  • At least one letter must be written by a mathematics professor.
  • It is suggested (but not required) that at least one letter addresses the applicant’s interest and potential for teaching.

Important Notes:

  • They accept applications on a rolling basis. Your application will be reviewed after all required parts have been submitted. Apply early!
  • Most schools have specific requirements students must fulfill before they study abroad. It is important that you check with your college/university to make sure you meet these requirements and will receive BSME transfer credit and all possible financial aid.
  • Participants must be undergraduates who are in their second year of college or above by the time they enter BSME, or recent graduates.

  • Go to the “Get Advice” page for information on drop-in advising hours, scheduling an advising appointment, returned student contacts, and college advisors for study abroad

How do I apply?

Applying to study abroad is a two-step process. You may complete both steps simultaneously, but the Cornell approval process must be complete before your program advisor in the Office of Global Learning can submit any approval or nomination to the program.

  1. For Cornell Approval, click on the "Apply" button on this webpage. Applications are approved by the Office of Global Learning on a rolling basis until the application deadline listed on this page.
  2. For Program Admission, complete an external application directly on the program’s webpage, using the link in the “Snapshot” section. (Note: This deadline may be in advance of the general Cornell deadline for approval. Many programs fill by rolling admission.
