CALS Undergraduate Research Conference Presentation Grant

An Engaged, Experiential, and Entrepreneurial (E3) Initiative

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences supports undergraduate students who are presenting original research at academic or professional conferences. Sharing research beyond Cornell is a powerful form of engaged learning. It builds confidence, strengthens communication skills, and positions students as emerging scholars in their fields.

Presenting at a conference represents the culmination of the research cycle. Students conceptualize, design, analyze, interpret, and then communicate findings to external audiences. This grant supports that final step and reinforces CALS’ commitment to engaged scholarship. It aligns directly with CALS’ E3 framework by supporting students as they move from classroom learning to professional engagement.

Eligibility

• Currently enrolled CALS undergraduate student
• Presenting original research (poster or oral presentation)
• Listed as a presenter on the official conference program

Application Process

Applications are submitted on a rolling basis through Experience Cornell.

Students must upload:

• Proof of acceptance to present
• Conference name, location, and dates
• A short description of the research being presented (150–300 words)
• Name of faculty mentor or research supervisor

No budget submission is required.

Funding Structure (Pre-Paid Awards)

Awards are fixed by conference location:

• $250 – Conference held within New York State (excluding New York City)
• $500 – Domestic conference (including New York City)
• $1,000 – International conference

Awards will be processed in advance of travel. Funding is intended to help offset conference-related expenses.

Post-Conference Requirements

Within two weeks of returning, students must submit:

• A photo of themselves presenting
• A 300–500 word reflection describing:
  • What they presented
  • What they learned from presenting
  • How the experience contributed to their academic or professional development

Selected reflections and photos may be featured in CALS communications to highlight undergraduate research and E3 engagement.

Funding Guidelines

To ensure sustainability and equitable access:

• Students may receive one award per academic year
• The program will operate with an annual funding cap
• Awards are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted
• Preference will be given to first-time recipients

Disbursement of Funds

Funds will be delivered via the RUSS process and are scheduled in Peoplesoft by the Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment and disbursed to student University Bursar accounts.  In most circumstances, funds disbursed via the RUSS process pay for any outstanding University Bursar charges first, then any resulting credit balance is refunded to the student by the Bursar’s Office via the Cashnet system.
