Overview

Opportunity Description

FSD achieves community-driven goals through asset-based development and international exchange in Uganda.

What is unique about FSD?

  • The Foundation for Sustainable Community-Based Development (FSD) is a non-profit organization that strives to make lasting, sustainable change that is deeply rooted in the community and driven by the community members themselves. FSD works with local community organizations, community members and professionals in eight sites around the world.
  • FSD opportunities are not-for-credit but may fulfill requirements for Global Health or IARD.
  • International development internships or community-based participatory research internships for individuals can be arranged for 4 weeks to a year..
  • Subject ares: Depending on the location, projects may focus on Education, Environmental Sustainability, Financial Inclusion, Gender Equity, Green Energy, Health, Human Rights, Sustainable Livelihoods, or Water & Sanitation.

Where does FSD work?

FSD works in Jinja Uganda, a town on the shores of Lake Victoria, at what is considered the "source of the Nile River." FSD has been active in Jinga for years, working with many active community-based efforts.

See FSD for details on the types of community-based projects in Jinga and internship impact stories.

How does FSD work?

Community is central to the FSD approach. FSD sees its role as connecting a diverse, international community to work effectively together to achieve lasting improvement in the quality of life for all.

With the assistance of engaged philanthropists, companies, colleges and universities, FSD is able to facilitate international internships, volunteering, research and service trips that respond to community-identified needs and locally-led initiatives.  Grounded in a philosophy of asset-based development, students work for and learn from local leaders to accomplish goals.

How do I apply?

Students applying for a Gap Year after graduation work directly with FSD.

Students applying for a Summer International Development Internship or Community-Based Research should register their summer plans with Cornell using the application on this page and apply directly to FSD for acceptance.
