Overview

Opportunity Description

Take your arts and sciences studies a step further in a city that radiates light and energy. Prestigious Sophia University presents challenging academics and every level of Japanese language instruction you need – and plunges you into an international scene full of students both local and international. Add colorful trips to explore beyond Tokyo, and you’ve got one amazing global adventure.

What is unique about this program?

Students enroll directly to this renowned school to learn Japanese language and culture, furthering their studies with courses from anthropology to political science (taught in English), while experiencing all that Tokyo has to offer.

Sophia University: Founded by Jesuits in 1913, this private institution is one of the leading universities in Japan. It welcomes more than 10,000 students, including international students from more than 40 countries. In addition to Japanese language courses, CIEE students will take courses through the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Most of the students here are Japanese, some having experience living abroad. The Yotsuya campus in central Tokyo includes a library, computer labs, faculty and administrative offices, classrooms, and sports grounds.

Sophia University offers Japanese language courses at various levels, including courses for students with near-native proficiency. Students – except for absolute beginners – take a placement exam during the orientation to assess their appropriate level.

All courses at Sophia University are taught by university faculty.

What is unique about Tokyo?

A city like no other, Tokyo is all about what’s new. With a population of more than 13 million people, it’s crowded, but it’s also super clean and safe. See how limited space has been maximized in ingenious ways and enjoy an astounding variety of shopping options and entertainment. In Tokyo, every customer gets the royal treatment from helpful clerks, trains run on time, and pockets of nature as well as throwbacks to times gone by are easy to find.
